Earth Day 5K Run Walk, Saturday morning April 13, 8A M  was an early celebration of Earth Day, on the soon to become  Overseas Heritage Trail in Key West. Starting one half mile east of Smathers beach bath house, runners and walkers ran to circle the compass rose on White Street pier and back. Over 80 starters finished to edible cookie awards with Enrique Vazquez, 17:22,  a new name in the overall winners position for the men and Lilla Whiteside, 21:52 as top women runner. Two Key West Southernmost Runners Joel Blakeman, 19:39, and Debora Bertolini, 22:35, took the top Masters (40 and over) positions, both running their first race in this division. Before the event race founder Marci Rose asked all participants to focus on the earth, and our environment while doing this run, then to follow up by changing at least one thing in our lives to help the environment. The proceeds of this race support the work of Clean Florida Keys, on the Florida Keys Scenic Highway, Overseas Heritage Trail, plus the Adopt a Shore and the Adopt a Highway clean up programs. Clean Florida Keys and the Key West Southernmost Runners want to thank all the volunteers that helped to make this event possible and the sponsors that supported it.
