Overall and Age Group Results follow Story. BLIMP ROAD 4-MILER RECAP A large crowd turned out on a beautiful winter morning for the Pirate Wellness Center’s 2nd Annual Blimp Road 4-Miler. This year’s race was an upgrade from last year’s inaugural fun run, with a full slate of unique awards, and raised a generous sum for St. Peter’s Church Seabee Foundation, which provides educational scholarships for single parent families in the Lower Keys. The course toured Cudjoe Key’s famous Blimp Road, running north to the Gulf shore and back to US-1. Two runners clearly dominated the large field, as, right from the get-go, Joanna McCoy, a 14-year-old prodigy from Tavernier, charged to a big lead, with only Nathan Landrum, 24, of Big Pine Key giving any kind of close pursuit. Landrum overtook McCoy in the final mile, with Islamorada’s Hugo Cortes taking third place, about four minutes behind. There was controversy, however, as the two leaders misread the course markings and turned early, shortening the route by close to 400 yards. Given their huge lead, and the impressive margin at the finish, the Race Committee decided that their places would stand, but that their times would be discounted, and a 2:00 penalty would be assessed on the official results. Landrum’s time will be listed as 24:49, and McCoy’s 25:00. Joan Scholz, 47 and also from Tavernier, was the 2nd place woman, running 27:57. Abigail White (29:48) from Key West, Priscilla Welzein (29:53) from Sugarloaf, and Tracy McDonald (30:29) from Big Pine rounded out the top five. Behind Cortes (27:30), the rest of the men’s top five were Key West’s Julio Castro (27:41), 16-year-old Alex Decker from New York (27:51), and 12-year-old Billy Welzien (28:52) from Sugarloaf Key. Gaetana Bologna from Marathon (32:21) and Susan Kochan from Key West (33:37) ran 1-2 in the Women’s Masters (40+) Division, while Michigan’s Wally Herrala (28:59) and Key West’s Mike Behmke (30:39) earned the top tow awards in the Men’s Masters race. In all, 117 finishers enjoyed the perfect weather and festive post-race gathering. The next race on the local running circuit is the No Name 5K, sponsored by the Domestic Abuse Shelter of the Lower Keys, which starts at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 28th.
