COLUMBUS DAY 5K/10K GETAWAY RUN/WALK

ISLAMORADA -
Jimmy Terpening of Port St. Lucie led from start to finish in winning the
inaugural Columbus Day Getaway 10K Run held Saturday morning along U.S. 1 in
Islamorada. Terpening, 20, covered the 6.2-mile point-to-point course in 37
minutes, 8 seconds, followed by Cudjoe Key’s Don Nelson in 45:11. Jim Ford of
Tavernier took third place in 45:17.
In the women’s 10K, Laure
Grube of Marathon won the Overall title in 43:53, Tavernier’s Leslie Schipper
was second in 44:11, and Dana Sambogna of Islamorada finished third in 47:20.
In the 5K run, Michael Rowe
of Fort Lauderdale took first in 18:37, Chris Barth of Key West was second in
21:20, and Islamorada’s Bill O’Brien finished third in 21:27.
In the women’s 5K, Fort
Lauderdale’s Maria Augustine was first in 21:33, Tavernier’s Ashley Wallace
finished second in 24:59, and Debbie Chaney of Tavernier was third in 25:27.
Karen Gallo of Islamorada
led the 5K walkers in 43:24, and Islamorada’s Susan Henry was the first 10K
walker in 1:39:00.
A total of 81 people
completed the events.
